Welcome to Sundays at All Hallows
The hymn Gloria in excelsis, “Glory to God in the highest, is one of the oldest Christian hymns, taking its opening words from the Gospel of Luke. In this Sunday’s service the Gloria in excelsis serves as a response to the reading from the New Testament. The Gloria in excelsis was originally a fixed element of the daily service of Lauds, a service of praise and prayer held every morning in the early Church. Indeed, it was one of the most popular features of that service.
This Sunday’s message takes a look at one reason why the conviction Jesus suffered and died for the sins of all humankind is important.
GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME
The time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. John 4: 23
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves,
and the truth is not in us.
But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just,
and will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Let us now confess our sins to almighty God.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
A reading from the Old Testament: Isaiah 53: 4-12
Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins!
But he was pierced for our rebellion,
crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed.
All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
We have left God’s paths to follow our own.
Yet the Lord laid on him
the sins of us all.
He was oppressed and treated harshly,
yet he never said a word.
He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.
And as a sheep is silent before the shearers,
he did not open his mouth.
Unjustly condemned,
he was led away.
No one cared that he died without descendants,
that his life was cut short in midstream.
But he was struck down
for the rebellion of my people.
He had done no wrong
and had never deceived anyone.
But he was buried like a criminal;
he was put in a rich man’s grave.
But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him
and cause him grief.
Yet when his life is made an offering for sin,
he will have many descendants.
He will enjoy a long life,
and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands.
When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish,
he will be satisfied.
And because of his experience,
my righteous servant will make it possible
for many to be counted righteous,
for he will bear all their sins.
I will give him the honors of a victorious soldier,
because he exposed himself to death.
He was counted among the rebels.
He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels.

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do us a favor.”
“What is your request?” he asked.
They replied, “When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.”
But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with?”
“Oh yes,” they replied, “we are able!”
Then Jesus told them, “You will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptized with my baptism of suffering. But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.”
When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Christians have historically seen in this Sunday’s reading from the Old Testament, from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, a reference to Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross for the sins of the world. They have concluded from this passage and similar passages in the Bible, including this Sunday’s New Testament reading, that in suffering and dying on the cross Jesus made atonement for all humankind’s sins, humanity’s rebellion against God, which had created a rift between God and ourselves. By his suffering and death, he wiped away the sins that separate us from God and put things right between God and ourselves.
The Anglican Church’s The Book of Common Prayer of 1662 affirm this view. “Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation of himself once offered) a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world….” So does The Sunday Service of the Methodists, a service book which John Wesley, compiled for the Methodist Societies in the United States and the United Kingdom, based upon the 1662 Prayer Book.
This conviction makes a significant difference to how we see other people and how we treat them. When we see every person as someone for who Jesus suffered and died, we are more likely to feel motivation to extend to them Jesus’ offer of salvation through faith in him and his call to follow him as a disciple no matter how that person may appear in our eyes.
While we may still have to struggle with any misperceptions of that person and any prejudices against them, we cannot fall back on the notion to which some Christians subscribe that Jesus’ suffering and death was for the sins of a limited number of people. This notion has appeal because it enables those who subscribe to it to usurp God in deciding who should be shown mercy and to give full play to their misperceptions and prejudices.
God has not, however, delegated to us the determination of the people upon whom God will have mercy. Rather he has tasked us with extending to all peoples Jesus’ offer of salvation through faith in him and his call to follow him as a disciple. He has tasked us with forming into disciples of Jesus those who respond, baptizing them, and instructing them all that Jesus commanded.

One Reason Why for Whom Jesus Suffered and Died Matters
